I am standing still

only when I am no longer waiting

I am not moving

because I wish to travel

can a child’s laughter

keep the treehouse upright

when the tree is gone

this love

to reach across the street

just grab your shoes

let’s try to get as far

as the birches

we can chill out

in this shadow here

before they call us home

for dinner

you put the news clipping
and the death records aside
and look through a decaying window frame

the radio promises a cold winter
the flowers have already
fallen out of their beds
and the only tree in the garden
cannot find as much as a clothes line
to reach out for

you walk back and forth over the gravel
not knowing what direction to take
with these new slippers
